Arsenal legend Paul Merson has been left with an egg on his face after making a bold prediction about Tottenham striker Harry Kane.
Kane grew into one of the best players in the world under the reign of Mauricio Pochettino, but Merson felt he couldn’t succeed under Jose Mourinho.
“I was concerned about Harry Kane when Jose took the role,” Merson told Sky Sports in June 2020. He played under Pochettino, and everywhere they went, Tottenham had a go. There have been targets, there have been crosses, there have been shots.
He’s going to play himself upfront, and it’s going to be hard work. Ultimately, he’s just trying to hit 60-yard throws to get involved in the game, and this isn’t Harry Kane.
“I don’t see him having 25-30 goals a season the way Jose likes to play, and he [Mourinho] won’t want to play like he did when he got in there for the first time, 4-2s and 5-3s, no way.”
