Ajax has announced that goalkeeper Andre Onana has been suspended by UEFA for 12 months for a doping violation.

The club says that the illegal substance Furosemide was found in the Cameroonian keeper’s urine. They say that they are going to appeal the ban because the goalie swallowed the medication innocently and unknowingly.

An Ajax statement reads: “A suspension of 12 months on Andre Onana for a doping violation was imposed by the disciplinary body of the European football association, UEFA. The goalkeeper discovered the substance Furosemide in his urine during an ‘out of competition’ search on October 30 last year.

The suspension is effective from today and extends to both national and international football activities.’

“Onana and Ajax will appeal the decision to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).”
