Ally McCoist Scotland

Scotland failed to impress in their World Cup playoff defeat to Ukraine despite their best team in years according to Ally McCoist. He represented Scotland in the 1990 World Cup. After their disappointing loss, Scotland will begin their Nations League campaign against Armenia on June 8. They will face Ukraine and the Republic of Ireland in the group stage of the tournament. The winner of the group will earn a playoff place for the Euros should they fail to qualify automatically.

“The reason we have improved is that we do have a better quality of player, we have a better standard of player,” former Scotland boss Ally McCoist said. “We do have boys who can pass the ball: (Billy) Gilmour, (John) McGinn, (Ryan) Christie, (Callum) McGregor, they can all pass the ball. They got outnumbered in the middle of the park, tactically I thought Ukraine was spot on. Zinchenko was terrific. We do have far better players than we’ve had for a number of years but unfortunately, they didn’t perform to the best of their ability, they didn’t pass the ball well enough and they didn’t create enough chances.”

“Everyone knows the situation in Ukraine and every game is like a final. We have a dream as a team to be at the World Cup. We have one more game, one more final and we need to win it. Otherwise, this game won’t mean anything,” Ukraine defender Oleksandr Zinchenko said. “Scotland is a great team and has unbelievable players in each line. But we did well. We scored three and could have scored more. The Wales game is going to be massive for us. We need to show our best performance in our lives and then we’ll see what happens.”
