England Women’s head coach Sarina Wiegman believes there is a need for more diversity in football with the Football Association tackling the issue. In contrast, only three of the 23 players on Wiegman’s Euro 2022 winning team were of Black, Asian, or mixed heritage, according to the FA’s second annual report on the Football Leadership Diversity Code. “That’s a legitimate question, and my dream is for the squad to include more Black players. I take your point,” England Women’s head coach Sarina Wiegman said. “I choose the best players for the senior squad based on their ability to perform, but I do believe that more needs to be done, and it is. The FA is doing more to make football accessible to everyone. We are aware that the team has distributed this letter to encourage more women to play football so that every girl in England, throughout Europe, and the rest of the world has access to the game. We must put a lot of effort into that.”
The number of players is expected to more than double by the end of 2023–24, according to plans unveiled by the FA in May to expand the current talent program for the women’s game. Girls between the ages of eight and sixteen will have access to a larger national network of Emerging Talent Centers thanks to financing from the Premier League. The “Discover My Talent” concept was first introduced last year, and that announcement came after it. With the scheduled to address the government later this month, Wiegman is certain that her inspiring team can.
